Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Our Sustainability Intern will assist and work in conjunction with the Global Product Manager in addressing organizational sustainability through development of sustainable business reporting procedures, establishing sustainability guidelines and policies, and promoting sustainability across the organization.

What you'll do!!  

  • Contribute to strategic discussions about sustainability program development and implementation.
  • Assist with developing sustainability project goals, objectives, initiatives, or strategies in collaboration with other sustainability professionals.
  • Assist with evaluating policies and regulatory requirements related to sustainability to include the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) for the European Union to make recommendations and evaluate progress on implementation activities.
  • Coordinate with multiple locations to gather information regarding sustainability metrics to meet business objectives, remain competitive and compliant.
  • Establish reasonable reporting timelines, measurement, and reporting methodology compliant with regulations/global standardization. 
  • Monitor and track sustainability indicators such as energy usage, natural resource usage, waste generation and recycling and other indicators. Provide support and follow up for multiple locations regarding sustainability metrics.
  • Provide information to assess cost effectiveness, technical feasibility and acceptance/buy in of sustainability initiatives.
  • Assist in Materiality Assessments to identify sustainability risks, opportunities, and impacts by region.
  • Assist in developing a methodology for cradle to grave life cycle assessment for sustainability; identify material inputs, what is missing, and recommend methods for obtaining missing information.
  • Compile, organize and determine how to present collected data.

Qualifications

Education/Experience  The ideal intern will be pursuing a degree from an accredited program; either undergraduate or graduate level.

Completion of second year or higher is preferred. Preference given to technical degrees, such as Environmental, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering.

Minimum overall GPA 2.80 required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Core People Skills.  Ability to positively interact and work collaboratively with a diverse group of people at all levels of the organization.  
  • Communication Skills. Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, listen and obtain clarification, and respond well to questions.  Proficiency in writing clearly and concisely and editing work for spelling and grammar. 
  • Computer/Applications Skills. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Power Point with knowledge of other Microsoft products.  Excel skills must include ability to write formulas, generate plots, and other basic data analysis operations.  Training in statistics a plus.
  • Analytical Skills.  Ability to define problems, collect objective data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Competent in linking big picture goals with mathematical formulas and measurable metrics.  The job involves development of methodologies to measure our carbon footprint and other key areas related to sustainability.  A basic understanding of statistical analysis, population size, data normalization, and fundamentals of good data collection is required.  Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify and solve problems or answer questions. 
  • Interpersonal Skills. Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. 
  • Sustainability.  Knowledge of basic principles of sustainable organizations to include environmental, social and economic.  Knowledge of cradle-to-crave lifecycle assessment, materiality assessment, or carbon tracking a plus.  Preferred candidate will also have a basic understanding of financial analysis, the third pillar of sustainability.
  • Core Business Skills.  Ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion in handling of proprietary and confidential information. Ability to work independently, without significant direction and to use resources effectively to “figure it out.”

While performing the essential responsibilities of this position, team members will work in an office environment.

The internship will be June - August.  

Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (or reasonable business hours).

Location is in our beautiful Spokane downtown location.  Gymnasium, large kitchen with stove, oven, ice machine and close to restaurants.

The minimum and maximum hourly range for this full-time position is $20 - $25. 

Our ranges are determined by role, level and location.  Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.  Please note that the compensation details listed in this posted role reflect the base salary only.
